I have the most current version of iTunes (but Windows not OSX).
I too an getting the Error (13) message trying to install from both my Win7 and Win XP machines - IHad to re-install my 3.1.3 from the back-up I (naturally!) made before trying the update.
Can anyone confirm if this transmec program 2ndMorpheus mentions works for an install using windows?

Why would Apple not let this .ipsw work with a Windows install? I mean - I'm not aware that developers are limited to testing their apps for a new OS using OSX only.

No...I'm an idiot. I just found the 4.0 firmware and wanted to try it out. Now I can't do anything with my phone.

You cannot use background settings on the 3g. Only on 3gs. there is a topic on this on apples dev forums.
They will probably correct it to allow 3g users to set background in the next beta.

Yes, I was able to install the 4.0 Update on 3GS without a hitch! Be sure you are on a Mac as it will fail on Windows and lock the phone!

I used an iMac and did not have to do anything special, away from holding the ALT key while clicking on Restore.

You could always just find someone with a Mac and do the upgrade. when the upgrade finishes, unplug the phone then plug it into your windows machine. I just did this with my wifes mac and am currently reloading all the data and contacts from my PC

When backing up my iphone on my Mac with 4.0 installed I get: "iTunes could not backup the iPhone 3GS because the iPhone refused the request"

Anyone else see this?

I thought it was having folders on my phone but I took them off and I still have it.

Did you find a solutiion to your problem? I was thinking I would have to wait until 4.0 Beta 2 was released and hopefully that solves the problem.
