I am using 2.16ghz, Mac OS 10.5.6, and Itunes 8.2.  I have disabled the firewall on my computer and on my router.  I am still getting the pink screen....any ideas?

Not sure what you have done to this point but start with a clean phone. If  you did a DAta Backup then just restore the phone to the latest 2.2.1 clean and then try the update. just a thought.

Does it start the install and then PSOD in the middle?

If it does then Itunes has already communicated wih the server since it does it in the very beginning. and then at the end. So it should not rellay be a firewall issue.

This might not seem obvious to some people but I got the same psod and all I did to alliviate this was unplug and replug my phone.
