Even though the GM release is available today, my phone, inside ITunes, says I have the most recent version available.

I have the beta 5 I downloaded and installed.  Will this be the case until a bug fix version of 3.0 is released, upping the version number so that my phone knows that there is  a later version of 3.0 available?

I solved my problem, but it wasn't easy.  My wife also has an IPhone.  It was still running 2.x, so I connected it to ITunes, and ITunes wanted to upgrade it to 3.0.  But there was a 'DOWNLOAD ONLY' option.  I checked that, once it was downloaded, I copied it off to another place so I could use it to upgrade my phone.  Worked great.

All you need to do is use the links on our websites "guides and links" page and download the firmware that is appropriate for your device and do a restore with itunes

I tried to do a restore by iTunes said that there was a problem with missing software and that it could not restore. Now my iPhone has stopped working and displays a purple screen indicating that I should connect to iTunes and cannot find any cell network. I plug into iTunes and it says that software on the iPhone "XXX" has expired and must be updated to a newer version. Itunes does a sync, and says that it has completed but the iPhone remains dead, Restore still does work and pressing update says that I have the latest version OS 3.0

All you need to do is use the liks on our website and select the appropriate firmware for your device. Then just update your firmware like you did before holding Shift+Update or shift+Restore. The next update from apple will just let you update via itunes like normal
